BRIEF: Serbian Cross May Cast Shadow on Sarajevo
Comment on this post
SARAJEVO, Bosnia and Herzegovina - Bosnia's international administrator, Slovak Miroslav Lajcak, called on Serb leaders to prohibit the construction of a 26-meter cross on Trebevic hill, from which Serb artillery shelled Sarajevo in during the Bosnian war.
Lajcak called the plan a provocation designed to create inter ethnic tensions. "Religious symbols when used property can play a role in promoting reconciliation. But too often location, dimensions, or design are misused to deliberately provoke and create conflict," he said.
Serbian leaders say the cross will be constructed in memory of the Serbs who died during the war.
The upper half of Trebevic Hill is located in Bosnian Serb territory and overlooks Sarajevo. The lower part of the hill is in Sarajevo, controlled by Muslim Bosniaks and Roman Catholic Croats.
