MÉXICO - Mexico has extradited the former Sinaloa drug cartel leader, Santiago Chavez, to the United States for allegedly distributing hundreds of pounds of cocaine into Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York.
Chavez was captured in Mexico in March of 2005 and will be prosecuted in the United States for possession with the intent to distribute 11 pounds of cocaine in New York.
Chavez’s extradition comes after a long trial in Mexico to inhibit extradition procedures. The Supreme Court of Mexico ultimately ruled in favor of extradition to the United States.
Within the last two years, the Mexican government has extradited 147 persons to the United States in an effort to fight against organized crime.
